Malena Bergmann: Soup Exhibition

Malena's sound piece/ecosystem and kinetic installation are included in SOUP, a group exhibition on view at Hart Witzen Gallery at 136 East 36th St. in Charlotte’s NODA neighborhood.

Malena Bergmann: Contemporary Cast Iron Exhibition

In mid-November Malena will have a kinetic sculpture on exhibit in "Contemporary Cast Iron II" at the National Metal Museum in Memphis, TN. Curated by Mark Guilbeau, Sculpture Professor at the University of Colorado, "Contemporary Cast Iron II" includes a variety of contemporary approaches to iron art making. Although the featured artwork is predominately comprised of cast iron, the show is not limited to just metals or the casting processes. The forty-six artists represented in the show couple metals with materials as diverse as wool, wood, glass, fish skin, and fog in contemporary explorations of this 5000 year-old process. The exhibition opens on November 15th and runs through January 19, 2009.

Malena will also participate in the "Iron Pour and Art Machine Performance" on November 15 from 5 to 8 pm by the artists of the Society for the Preservation of Humanity. This exciting event will take place on the Museum grounds in conjunction with the opening of the exhibition, "Contemporary Cast Iron" sponsored by Lawler Foundry. In addition to a double-cupola iron pour, the event will feature performances by 'art machines' specially crafted by the artists.

Malena Bergmann: NC Arts Council Fellowship

(September 2008) Twenty artists in North Carolina are recipients of the 2008 – 2009 North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship Awards in the categories of choreography, craft, film and video and visual arts. Malena’s 16mm experimental film of a water-based performance piece was recognized with the award.

Maja Godlewska: Exhibitions

In September 2008 Godlewska participated in the 23rd Tallahassee International Juried Exhibition at Florida State University and had a solo show "Cumuli and Other Clouds" at the San Antonio College in San Antonio, TX.

Godlewska is currently working on a Public Art Commission for Beatties Ford Road Library in Charlotte, NC, which will be installed in early 2010.

Maja Godlewska: WODA exhibition

In July 2008 Maja Godlewska (US/PL), Susan Brenner (US), Marek Ranis (US/PL), Hrafnkell Sigurdsson (Iceland) participated in WODA (Water) International, a four artists' outdoor, site-specific exhibition in Wroclaw, Poland and co-curated with Marcin Wiktorski. Water was the exhibition theme, interpreted as a physical occurrence/natural resource and as a metaphor for change, movement and formlessness. WODA (Water) is a part of Wroclaw Non-Stop, an annual, international, summer festival, showcasing visual arts, performing arts, music and film.

Rachele Riley: Print Magazine Design Winner

Assistant Professor Rachele Riley's design of the "Ann Agee: Boxing in the Kitchen" exhibition brochure has been selected to be included in the Print Magazine Regional Design Annual 2008. This year 863 winning designs were selected from tens of thousands of entries.

Angela Herren: Receives Fulbright Award

Angela Marie Herren, Assistant Professor in Art History, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture and conduct research at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, Mexico during the 2008 – 2009 academic year. Angela Marie Herren will be working on her book "Portraying the Mexica (Aztec) Past: A Study of 16th-Century Mexican Painting in Transition."

Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.

ART PARTY: Tuesday, October 21 from 4 to 7 pm

The ART PARTY brings all art and art history students and faculty together for an afternoon of visual presentations, food and music. There will be an introduction to the faculty and area concentrations, with opening remarks made by Roy Strassberg (Chair of the Department of Art and Art History) and Ken Lambla (Dean of the College of Arts and Architecture). Following the presentations, we will enjoy food and a live band! Come and have a good time!

Rachele Riley: Exhibition "Media X"

Media outlets frequently mislead the public by failing to provide important facts and information in their coverage of current events and news. 1708 Gallery’s election year exhibition Media X, curated by Vaughn Whitney Garland, cuts through the absence of the real story and exposes what many media agencies refuse to cover completely, if at all.

Works by: Chris Barr, Véronique Côté, Althea Georgelas, Michael Takeo Magruder, Rachele Riley, Matthew Kenyon, Kalika Gorski, Patrick Gregory and Bob Paris.

Panel discussion on Friday, October 17 at 6pm, followed by an opening reception. The exhibition will be on view from October 17 to November 22, 2008.

Rachele Riley: SECAC 2008 New Orleans

Rachele Riley (UNCC) and Stephanie Hutin (Pitzer College and NewSPAT) presented their collaboration (an on-going performance realized in the form of an animation), "The Unbearable Slightness of Being," on a panel that they also co-chaired, "Slightness of Being: Fresh Ideas in Animation Art," at the 2008 Southeastern College Art Conference in New Orleans, LA. Presentations on this theme were also made by John Jota Leaños (California College of the Arts), Yam Lau (York University) and Pamela Taylor (Virginia Commonwealth University).
